malicious code from websites is fairly common. In essence, it means that the website will get information about you that it did not disclose in the “fine print”, information harvesting that breaks the law, or it will run code that impacts the functionality or data integrity of your machine.

To some degree, it is somewhat similar of us walking up to the window at a customer’s house, to look inside, to document what valuables we see and to post this information to the highest bidder.

With the correct browser settings, it is fairly easy to protect against some of this, it is close to impossible to protect against all, especially because the law is very generous on how it defines our own data privacy.

For example, Google Mail and Yahoo Mail harvest all the e-mails for marketable information and this includes that they use “themed”, interest specific banner ads when you read e-mails or use one of their other services. So, why is this that Yahoo and Google can read our e-mails, but we all would be really, really upset if this US postal service would read our mail?

Gmail goes even further, if you have the Google mail apps, the harvesting algorithm is smart enough to recognize what is called negative news e-mail, for example about the death of a friend. In those cases, Google for example will not run a banner ad about a local funeral home.

As questionably and troubling this is, it is perfectly legal, as it is allowed by law and Yahoo and Google disclose that they do this. <!-- / message --><!-- attachments -->
